ON ANGLING.                            183
On yonder bank I drew him, His silver side laid there,
He gaped and gasped for water, But drew in only air.
From fatal hook I freed him, Then laid him on the green,
Exclaiming, " braver fellow By angler ne'er was seen.
Thou hast fought thy battle nobly, With skilful might and main.
But now the struggle's over, I'll put thee out of pain."
Then with a smooth-edged pebble,
I hit him on the head, His fins they spread convulsive,
He shivered, and was—dead.
ANGLING.
